Marine materials supply — tasks for suppliers and ship chandlers

Marine materials are what is consumed daily on board: fuel, oils, technical fluids, paints, welding and consumable materials, ropes, fasteners, insulation, gasket and sealing materials. Timely supply determines not only repair but also the daily operation of the vessel. The Steel Water task board publishes tasks for supplying materials of any category and volume — from a single barrel of oil to comprehensive fleet supply.

Tasks are posted by shipowners, shipping companies, technical managers, shipyards, ship repair yards and supply departments. Contractors are marine material suppliers, traders, manufacturers, distributors, warehouses and logistics companies.

Types of materials on the task board

  • Fuel and lubricants — diesel, fuel oil, lubricating oils, hydraulic fluids, coolants
  • Paints and coatings — primers, enamels, anticorrosion coatings, antifoulings, solvents
  • Welding materials — electrodes, welding wire, shielding gases, fluxes
  • Ropes, cables, rigging — steel and synthetic ropes, slings, shackles, turnbuckles, blocks
  • Fasteners — bolts, nuts, studs, washers, cotter pins, rivets
  • Gasket and sealing materials — paronite, silicone, asbestos, rubber, graphite
  • Insulation materials — mineral wool, thermal insulation, acoustic insulation, fire protection
  • Pipes, fittings and valves — steel, stainless, copper pipes, elbows, flanges, gate valves
  • Consumables — filters, rags, brushes, gloves, cleaning agents, solvents

What to specify in a materials task

  • Vessel or object — name, type, IMO, location or nearest port of call
  • Category and name — exact name, grade, type, class of material
  • Manufacturer — preferred manufacturer or brand, whether equivalents are allowed
  • Quantity — exact volume, weight, number of packages, tolerances
  • Requirements — certificates (class, manufacturer, fire), country of origin, shelf life
  • Documents — specification, technical requirement, equivalents, catalogue references
  • Timeline and logistics — when required, delivery point, delivery terms (air, sea, road, DHL)
  • Urgency — scheduled supply or urgent (tied to repair, emergency or departure)
  • Additional — packaging, marking, storage requirements, insurance needs

What matters for material suppliers

Material supply is work where speed, reliability and logistics are critical. When responding to a task, specify: availability in stock or lead time on order, readiness to offer equivalents with prices and specifications, availability of certificates (class, manufacturer, fire, origin), delivery timeline and route to port, readiness to handle freight and export-import documentation, warranty on the supplied material, minimum order quantity. If the task is urgent — confirm the ability to ship immediately (air, DHL, courier).

Documents and safety

All supplied materials are accompanied by a packing list, invoice and, where required, a certificate of origin, certificate of quality, fire certificate or classification society approval. For dangerous goods (fuel, solvents, paints, gases) — Safety Data Sheet (SDS/MSDS), IMDG marking, compliance with transport and storage rules are mandatory. If you have experience with such requirements — mention it in your response.

Post materials tasks for free — find a supplier in the required region or for a specific category. Or respond if you have a warehouse, access to manufacturers or a partner network. All active tasks — in the Materials section.
