Scheduled vessel maintenance — tasks for service companies and ship repair enterprises

Scheduled vessel maintenance is a set of routine works performed according to a schedule to maintain the technical condition of the hull, machinery, systems and equipment in accordance with the requirements of the classification society, manufacturers and international conventions. Scheduled maintenance prevents emergency failures, extends equipment service life, preserves the vessel's class and avoids unplanned downtime. The Steel Water task board publishes tasks for all types of scheduled maintenance — from annual main engine service to dry-dock inspection and preparation for the next class survey.

Tasks are posted by shipowners, shipping companies, technical managers, fleet operators, shipyards and service companies. Contractors are ship repair enterprises, service companies, authorised service centres of manufacturers, specialised teams and individual experts with maritime industry experience.

Types of scheduled maintenance on the task board

  • Main engine maintenance — routine works, consumables replacement, diagnostics, adjustment, testing
  • Auxiliary engine and generator maintenance — running-hour based service, unit replacement, parameter checks
  • Ship system maintenance — fuel, oil, cooling, ballast, bilge, fire-fighting systems
  • Pump, separator, heat exchanger maintenance — cleaning, element replacement, performance checks
  • Electrical equipment and automation maintenance — switchboards, generators, cable networks, control and alarm systems
  • Deck machinery maintenance — cranes, winches, windlasses, capstans, hatch covers, gangways, ramps
  • Propeller and steering gear maintenance — shaft, stern tube, rudder, thruster checks
  • Hull and underwater part maintenance — cleaning, painting, inspection, anode replacement, thickness checks
  • Safety system maintenance — fire, life-saving, navigation, emergency systems
  • Cargo system maintenance — cargo pumps, pipelines, valves, inert gas systems
  • Preparation for class survey — dry-dock inspection, defect detection, documentation
  • Annual and intermediate maintenance — scheduled routine works, seasonal service, preservation

What to specify in a scheduled maintenance task

  • Vessel — name, type, IMO, flag, class, year of build, location
  • Type of maintenance — scheduled, annual, intermediate, seasonal, class preparation
  • Equipment — type, manufacturer, model, running hours, date of last service
  • Scope of works — list of routine works, what to check, replace, adjust
  • Documents — manufacturer instructions, regulations, previous service acts, defect lists
  • Location — port, shipyard, anchorage, afloat or in dock, region
  • Timeline — planned start and completion dates, window between voyages
  • Requirements for contractor — certificates, approvals, manufacturer authorisation, experience with similar equipment
  • Class and survey — whether classification society involvement is required, what documents are needed after maintenance
  • Report format — work completion act, test reports, entries in ship documents, warranty obligations

What matters for service companies and ship repair enterprises

When responding to a task, specify: experience performing scheduled maintenance on vessels of similar type and class, availability of manufacturer authorisations (Wärtsilä, MAN, Caterpillar, ABB, Siemens, etc.), certified mechanical, electrical, automation and hydraulic specialists, valid certificates and approvals (classification societies, ISO, manufacturers), readiness to perform works within the specified timeline and location, ability to promptly supply consumables and spare parts, experience with classification societies and ship documentation, as well as readiness to provide a warranty on completed works. If maintenance is part of preparation for a class survey — specify experience participating in such surveys.

Documents and safety

Scheduled vessel maintenance is performed in accordance with the requirements of classification societies, international conventions (SOLAS, MARPOL, MLC), equipment manufacturer instructions and labour protection rules. When working in the engine room, in enclosed spaces, with electrical equipment, pressurised hydraulics and at height, safety requirements are observed: work permit, personal protective equipment, gas-air environment control, fencing of danger zones, equipment lockout. As-built documentation, maintenance acts, material certificates, test reports and entries in ship documents are mandatory elements of the report. If you have experience with such standards — mention it in your response.
