Anchor gear repair — tasks for ship repair enterprises and service companies
The anchor gear is one of the key systems of a vessel, ensuring safe anchorage, mooring and manoeuvring in confined conditions. The anchor gear includes anchors, anchor chains, windlass, capstan, hawse pipes, stoppers, chain locker and securing system. Wear, corrosion, deformation, chain breaks and windlass failures lead to anchor loss, emergencies and threats to the vessel and crew. Anchor gear repair requires certified specialists, equipment for working with chains and heavy structures, as well as as-built documentation. The Steel Water task board publishes tasks for all types of anchor gear repair — from chain link replacement to complete anchor replacement and windlass repair.
Tasks are posted by shipowners, shipping companies, technical managers, fleet operators, shipyards, ship repair enterprises and insurance companies. Contractors are ship repair yards, service companies, specialised teams, anchor gear manufacturers and individual experts with experience in anchor systems.

What matters for ship repair enterprises and service companies
When responding to a task, specify: experience repairing anchor gears of similar vessel type and class, availability of equipment for working with anchors and chains (cranes, winches, test benches, heat treatment furnaces), availability of certified welders and mechanical and hydraulic specialists, availability of spare parts and components or ability to supply them promptly, valid certificates and approvals (classification societies, ISO, anchor gear manufacturers), readiness to perform works within the specified timeline and location, ability to conduct anchor gear load testing and produce protocols, experience with classification societies and surveyors, as well as readiness to provide a warranty on completed works. If the anchor gear is to be replaced — specify the ability to manufacture or supply new equipment.
Documents and safety
Anchor gear repair is performed in accordance with the requirements of classification societies, international conventions (SOLAS, MARPOL, MLC), manufacturer instructions and labour protection rules. When working with heavy structures, chains, pressurised hydraulics, in dock and at height, safety requirements are observed: work permit, personal protective equipment, fencing of danger zones, equipment lockout, load capacity check, load testing. Test protocols, defect acts, material certificates and entries in ship documents are mandatory elements of the report. If you have experience with such standards — mention it in your response.
