Ship Repair — tasks and contractors

Ship repair is a complex of works to restore the technical condition of a vessel's hull, machinery, systems and equipment. Ship repair includes dry-docking, afloat repair, replacement and restoration of structures, repair of main and auxiliary engines, pipelines, electrical equipment, automation systems. The safety of the vessel, its seaworthiness, class and permission to operate depend on the quality and timing of repair. The Steel Water task board publishes tasks for all types of ship repair — from emergency hull restoration to scheduled dry-docking and vessel modernisation.

Tasks are posted by shipowners, shipping companies, technical managers, fleet operators, shipyards and insurance companies. Contractors are ship repair yards, shipyards, contractor organisations, service companies, specialist teams and individual experts with maritime industry experience.

Dry-docking repair — docking, underwater hull repair, cleaning and painting, shell plating replacement
Afloat repair — elimination of damage without docking, repair of above-water hull, decks, superstructures

What to specify in a ship repair task

Vessel — name, type, IMO, flag, class, year of build, location
Type of repair — dry-docking, afloat, emergency, scheduled, modernisation
Scope of works — list of defects, what to repair, replace or restore
Defect list — defect act, drawings, photos of damage, surveyor reports
Repair location — port, shipyard, dock, anchorage, region where the vessel is located
Timeline — planned start and completion dates, vessel downtime
Requirements for contractor — certificates, approvals, experience with similar vessels
Class and survey — whether classification society involvement is required, what documents are needed after repair
Report format — work completion act, as-built documentation, warranty obligations
Budget and payment terms — estimated cost, payment stages, warranty retention

What matters for ship repair enterprises

When responding to a task, specify: availability of production facilities (dock, slipway, berth, cranes, workshops), experience repairing vessels of similar type and class, availability of certified welders, machinery, electrical and automation specialists, valid certificates and approvals (classification societies, ISO, industry), readiness to perform works within the specified timeline and location, ability to provide a warranty on completed works, experience with classification societies and surveyors, as well as readiness to produce as-built documentation. If the repair is tied to an accident or insurance claim — specify experience with insurance companies and P&I clubs.

Documents and safety

Ship repair works are performed in accordance with the requirements of classification societies, international conventions (SOLAS, MARPOL, MLC), labour protection and fire safety rules. When working in enclosed spaces, at height, with dangerous cargo and in dock, safety requirements are observed: work permit, personal protective equipment, gas-air environment control, fencing of danger zones. As-built documentation, defect acts, material certificates and test reports are mandatory elements of the report. If you have experience with such standards — mention it in your response.
