Ship electrical system repair — tasks for electrical installation and service companies
Electrical systems are the nervous system of a vessel. The operation of main and auxiliary engines, generators, control systems, navigation, communication, lighting, deck machinery and cargo systems depends on their condition. Failure of electrical equipment at sea leads to loss of control, emergencies and vessel stoppage. Electrical system repair requires certified specialists, knowledge of ship specifics, compliance with classification society requirements and as-built documentation. The Steel Water task board publishes tasks for all types of electrical installation and repair works — from cable line replacement to repair of generators, switchboards and automation systems.
Tasks are posted by shipowners, shipping companies, technical managers, fleet operators, shipyards, ship repair enterprises and service companies. Contractors are electrical installation organisations, service companies, authorised manufacturer centres, specialised teams, electrical engineers and individual experts with experience in ship electrical equipment.
Types of electrical system repair works on the task board
- Generator and alternator repair — main and auxiliary generators, replacement of units, windings, bearings
- Main and auxiliary switchboard repair — main switchboard, distribution boards, replacement of automation, protections, instruments
- Electric motor repair — pumps, fans, compressors, winches, cranes, windlasses
- Cable line replacement and repair — power, control, signal cables, cable replacement, new route laying
- Control and automation system repair — controllers, sensors, monitoring systems, alarm systems
- Lighting system repair — main, emergency, deck, signal lighting
- Navigation equipment repair — radar, GPS, echo sounders, gyrocompasses, communication systems
- Emergency power system repair — emergency generators, batteries, UPS, uninterruptible power systems
- Frequency converter and drive repair — frequency converters, thyristor drives, soft-start
- Explosion-proof equipment repair — equipment for hazardous areas, tankers, gas carriers
- Electrical equipment diagnostics and testing — insulation resistance measurement, thermography, load testing
- Emergency electrical system repair — elimination of consequences of short circuits, failures, damage
What to specify in an electrical system repair task
- Vessel — name, type, IMO, flag, class, location
- Equipment — type, manufacturer, model, year of manufacture, serial number, voltage, power
- Fault — description of the problem, what doesn't work, when detected, signs of failure
- Scope of works — repair, replacement, diagnostics, modernisation, testing
- Documents — diagrams, drawings, instructions, defect list, photos of damage
- Work location — port, shipyard, dock, anchorage, afloat or in dock, region
- Timeline — planned start and completion dates, tied to vessel departure
- Requirements for contractor — certificates, approvals, manufacturer authorisation, experience with ship electrical equipment
- Class and survey — whether classification society involvement is required, what documents are needed after works
- Report format — work completion act, test protocols, material certificates, warranty obligations
What matters for electrical installation and service companies
When responding to a task, specify: experience repairing ship electrical equipment of similar type and manufacturer, availability of manufacturer authorisations (ABB, Siemens, Schneider Electric, Caterpillar, Wärtsilä, Kongsberg, etc.), certified electrical engineers and automation specialists, availability of calibrated measuring and diagnostic equipment (megohmmeters, thermographs, analysers), valid certificates and approvals (classification societies, ISO, manufacturers, approvals for explosion-proof equipment), readiness to perform works within the specified timeline and location, ability to conduct testing and produce protocols, experience with classification societies and surveyors, as well as readiness to provide a warranty on completed works. If works involve hazardous areas or explosion-proof equipment — specify relevant approvals.
Documents and safety
Electrical system repair is performed in accordance with the requirements of classification societies, international conventions (SOLAS, MARPOL, MLC), electrical safety rules, manufacturer instructions and labour protection rules. When working with live electrical equipment, in enclosed spaces, at height, with explosion-proof equipment and in hazardous areas, safety requirements are observed: work permit, personal protective equipment, equipment lockout, voltage absence check, gas-air environment control, fencing of danger zones. Test protocols, defect acts, material certificates and entries in ship documents are mandatory elements of the report. If you have experience with such standards — mention it in your response.
