Pipeline repair and replacement — tasks for ship repair enterprises and service companies

Pipelines are the circulatory system of a vessel. The operation of main and auxiliary engines, fuel, oil, ballast, bilge, fire-fighting and cargo systems depends on their condition. Wear, corrosion, cracks, accident damage and loss of pipeline tightness lead to equipment failures, environmental pollution and emergencies. Pipeline repair and replacement require certified welders, knowledge of materials and technologies, as well as as-built documentation. The Steel Water task board publishes tasks for all types of pipeline works — from replacing individual sections to complete re-piping of systems and installation of new lines.

Tasks are posted by shipowners, shipping companies, technical managers, fleet operators, shipyards, ship repair enterprises and service companies. Contractors are ship repair yards, service companies, specialised teams, installation organisations and individual experts with experience in ship pipelines.

Types of pipeline repair and replacement works on the task board

  • Replacement of pipeline sections — cutting out defective sections, manufacturing and installing new ones
  • Complete pipeline replacement — re-piping of systems, replacement of entire lines
  • Pipeline repair — crack sealing, elimination of leaks, restoration of tightness
  • Fuel system repair — fuel pipelines, valves, fuel preparation systems
  • Oil system repair — oil pipelines, lubrication systems, hydraulics
  • Ballast and bilge system repair — ballast, bilge, fire-fighting pipelines
  • Cargo system repair — cargo pipelines, inert gas systems, tank washing systems
  • Cooling system repair — sea water and internal cooling systems, heat exchangers
  • Compressed air system repair — air pipelines, compressors, pneumatics
  • Steam and condensate system repair — steam pipelines, thermal insulation, valves
  • Pipeline repair from special materials — stainless steel, copper, titanium, plastic, bimetal
  • Pipeline testing — hydraulic, pneumatic, tightness, flushing

What to specify in a pipeline repair or replacement task

  • Vessel or object — name, type, IMO, flag, class, location
  • System — which system: fuel, oil, ballast, bilge, fire-fighting, cargo
  • Material and diameter — steel, stainless, copper, titanium, plastic, diameter, wall thickness
  • Scope of works — length, number of joints, replacement or repair
  • Documents — diagrams, drawings, defect lists, acts, photos of damage
  • Work location — port, shipyard, dock, anchorage, afloat or in dock, region
  • Timeline — planned start and completion dates, tied to vessel departure
  • Requirements for contractor — certificates, approvals, experience with ship systems, availability of certified welders
  • Class and survey — whether classification society involvement is required, what documents are needed after works
  • Report format — work completion act, test protocols, material certificates, warranty obligations

What matters for ship repair enterprises and service companies

When responding to a task, specify: experience repairing and replacing ship pipelines of various systems, availability of certified welders for the required welding types and materials, equipment for manufacturing and installing pipelines (bending, cutting, welding, processing), availability of materials and components or ability to supply them promptly, valid certificates and approvals (classification societies, ISO, manufacturers), readiness to perform works within the specified timeline and location, ability to test pipelines for tightness and produce protocols, experience with classification societies and surveyors, as well as readiness to provide a warranty on completed works. If works involve dangerous media (fuel, gas, chemicals) — specify experience and approvals for such works.

Documents and safety

Pipeline repair and replacement are performed in accordance with the requirements of classification societies, international conventions (SOLAS, MARPOL, MLC), manufacturer instructions and labour protection rules. When working with fuel, gas, chemical media, under pressure, in enclosed spaces and at height, safety requirements are observed: work permit, personal protective equipment, gas-air environment control, ventilation, fencing of danger zones, equipment lockout. Test protocols, defect acts, material certificates and entries in ship documents are mandatory elements of the report. If you have experience with such standards — mention it in your response.
