Deck machinery and equipment repair — tasks for ship repair enterprises and contractors

Deck machinery and equipment are key systems ensuring vessel operation: cargo cranes, winches, windlasses, capstans, anchoring and mooring devices, hatch covers, gangways, ramps, deck cranes and lifts. Cargo operations, mooring, anchoring and crew safety depend on their serviceability. Failure of a deck mechanism can halt cargo operations and lead to vessel downtime. The Steel Water task board publishes tasks for repair, maintenance and replacement of deck machinery and equipment of any type.

Tasks are posted by shipowners, shipping companies, technical managers, fleet operators, shipyards, ports and insurance companies. Contractors are ship repair enterprises, service companies, specialised teams, equipment suppliers and individual experts with experience in deck machinery.

Types of deck machinery repair works on the task board

What to specify in a deck machinery repair task

  • Vessel — name, type, IMO, flag, class, location
  • Equipment — mechanism type, manufacturer, model, year of manufacture, serial number
  • Fault — description of the problem, what doesn't work, when detected, signs of failure
  • Scope of works — repair, replacement, modernisation, maintenance
  • Documents — drawings, instructions, defect list, photos of damage, previous repair reports
  • Repair location — port, shipyard, anchorage, afloat or in dock, region
  • Timeline — planned start and completion dates, vessel downtime
  • Requirements for contractor — certificates, approvals, experience with similar equipment, availability of spare parts
  • Class and survey — whether classification society involvement is required, what documents are needed after repair
  • Report format — work completion act, test reports, warranty obligations

What matters for ship repair enterprises and service companies

When responding to a task, specify: experience repairing deck machinery of similar type and manufacturer, availability of certified hydraulic, electrical and mechanical specialists, availability of spare parts or ability to supply them promptly, valid certificates and approvals (classification societies, ISO, equipment manufacturers), readiness to perform works within the specified timeline and location, ability to conduct load testing and provide a warranty, experience with classification societies and surveyors, as well as readiness to produce as-built documentation. If the equipment is imported — specify experience with foreign manufacturers and availability of technical documentation.

Documents and safety

Deck machinery repair is performed in accordance with the requirements of classification societies, international conventions (SOLAS, MARPOL, MLC), labour protection and safety rules. When working with lifting mechanisms, pressurised hydraulics, electric drives and at height, safety requirements are observed: work permit, personal protective equipment, fencing of danger zones, load capacity check, load testing. As-built documentation, defect acts, material certificates and test reports are mandatory elements of the report. If you have experience with such standards — mention it in your response.
