Welding works of any complexity — tasks for welders, teams and ship repair enterprises
Welding works are one of the key types of work in shipbuilding and ship repair. The tightness of the hull, the strength of structures, the reliability of pipelines and the safety of the entire vessel depend on the quality of welds. Welding is performed during construction, repair, modernisation, emergency restoration and in dock. Welding errors lead to cracks, leaks, structural failures and serious accidents. The Steel Water task board publishes tasks for all types of welding works — from hull welding and pipeline repair to welding of critical structures and work in difficult spatial positions.
Tasks are posted by shipowners, shipping companies, technical managers, shipyards, ship repair enterprises, contractor organisations, service companies and insurance companies. Contractors are ship repair yards, welding teams, service companies, certified welders, specialists in welding critical structures and individual experts with maritime industry experience.
Types of welding works on the task board
- Hull welding — welding of shell plating, framing, sections, blocks, elimination of cracks and deformations
- Pipeline and system welding — fuel, oil, ballast, bilge, fire-fighting systems
- Welding of critical structures — foundations, brackets, supports, hull framing elements
- Welding in difficult spatial positions — vertical, overhead, angled, in hard-to-reach places
- Welding of various steels and alloys — carbon, stainless, aluminium, copper, titanium, bimetal
- Repair welding — crack sealing, restoration of worn surfaces, surfacing
- Welding afloat and in dock — underwater welding, above-water part welding, work in confined conditions
- Welding of deck machinery and equipment — fastenings, bases, cargo system elements
- Welding of propeller and steering gear — repair of propellers, shafts, stern tubes, rudders
- Welding during modernisation and conversion — installation of new equipment, retrofitting
- Quality control of welded joints — visual, non-destructive, tightness testing
- Emergency welding — elimination of consequences of accidents, holes, ruptures, damage
What to specify in a welding task
- Vessel or object — name, type, IMO, flag, class, location
- Type of welding works — hull, pipeline, repair, emergency, modernisation
- Material — type of steel or alloy, thickness, surface condition
- Scope of works — length of welds, number of joints, what to weld or restore
- Documents — drawings, process maps, defect lists, photos of damage, class requirements
- Work location — port, shipyard, dock, anchorage, afloat or in dock, region
- Timeline — planned start and completion dates, tied to vessel departure
- Requirements for welder — valid qualifications, approvals, shipboard welding experience, knowledge of weld types
- Class and survey — whether classification society involvement is required, what documents are needed after welding
- Report format — work completion act, control protocols, material certificates, warranty obligations
What matters for welders, teams and ship repair enterprises
When responding to a task, specify: availability of valid welder qualifications and certificates for the required welding type and materials, experience in shipboard welding and work at shipbuilding and ship repair facilities, knowledge of weld types and quality control methods, ability to read drawings and work from process maps, readiness to work in difficult conditions, at height, in enclosed spaces and in dock, availability of equipment and materials, readiness to perform works within the specified timeline and location, ability to conduct quality control and produce as-built documentation, experience with classification societies and surveyors, as well as readiness to provide a warranty on completed works. If welding is tied to an accident or insurance claim — specify experience with insurance companies and P&I clubs.
Documents and safety
Welding works are performed in accordance with the requirements of classification societies, international conventions (SOLAS, MARPOL, MLC), process maps and labour protection rules. When working in enclosed spaces, at height, with dangerous materials and in dock, safety requirements are observed: work permit, personal protective equipment, gas-air environment control, ventilation, fencing of danger zones, fire prevention measures. Quality control of welded joints, test protocols, material certificates and entries in ship documents are mandatory elements of the report. If you have experience with such standards — mention it in your response.
