Hydraulic repair and maintenance — tasks for hydraulic service companies

Hydraulic systems on vessels operate steering gear, cargo cranes, windlasses, winches, hatch covers, deck machinery and stabilisation systems. Hydraulic failure means loss of steering or stopped cargo operations. The Steel Water task board publishes tasks for repair, diagnostics and maintenance of hydraulic systems of any complexity.

Tasks are posted by shipowners, shipping companies, technical managers, shipyards and port equipment operators. Contractors are hydraulic service companies, engineering firms, hydraulic component suppliers and mobile repair teams.

Types of hydraulic work on the task board

  • Hydraulic pump repair — axial piston, gear, vane, radial piston pumps
  • Hydraulic motor and cylinder repair — rod restoration, seal replacement, re-sleeving
  • Valve and directional control repair — proportional, relief, check, reducing valves
  • Steering gear repair — ram, rotary vane, rotary piston, diagnostics and tuning
  • Deck machinery maintenance — cranes, windlasses, capstans, winches, hatch covers
  • Diagnostics and inspection — pressure measurement, oil analysis, internal leak detection, thermal imaging
  • Hydraulic hose and pipe replacement — high-pressure hoses, fittings, valves
  • Hydraulic fluid flushing and replacement — filtration, system flushing, new oil fill

What to specify in a hydraulic task

  • Vessel or object — name, type, IMO, location (port, dock, anchorage)
  • System — steering gear, cargo crane, windlass, winch, hatch cover, other
  • Make and model — hydraulic manufacturer (Rexroth, Parker, Sauer, Danfoss, Kawasaki, etc.)
  • Fault symptoms — pressure drop, noise, heating, leaks, slow operation, total failure
  • Scope — repair, replacement, diagnostics, maintenance, spare parts supply
  • Documents — availability of hydraulic diagram, drawings, operation manual
  • Urgency — planned or emergency, allowed vessel downtime
  • Additional — on-board visit, docking, offshore work required

What matters for hydraulic service companies

Hydraulics requires not only experience but also specialised equipment: test benches for pumps and motors, diagnostic systems, tools for pressing and boring. When responding to a task, specify: experience with specific hydraulic brands, availability of a mobile workshop or field team, work timeline, warranty on repair and parts, manufacturer certificates. If the task is urgent — confirm readiness to depart within hours.

Safety and documents

High-pressure hydraulic work requires strict safety compliance. After repair, tests are performed on a bench or on board with pressure, temperature and performance measurement. All work is documented by an act, warranty certificate and test report. If you have experience with classification society standards — mention it in your response.

Post hydraulic tasks for free — find a service or spare parts supplier in the required region. Or respond to tasks if you have a mobile team or workshop. All active tasks — in the Hydraulics section.
