Steering gear repair — tasks for ship repair enterprises and service companies
The steering gear is one of the key systems of a vessel, ensuring manoeuvrability, course stability and safe manoeuvring. The steering gear includes the rudder, rudder stock, steering engine, drives, hydraulic and electrical control systems, as well as emergency control systems. Failure of the steering gear at sea leads to loss of manoeuvrability, emergencies and serious consequences for the vessel, crew and cargo. The Steel Water task board publishes tasks for all types of steering gear repair — from seal replacement and hydraulics repair to complete steering engine replacement and rudder stock restoration.
Tasks are posted by shipowners, shipping companies, technical managers, fleet operators, shipyards, ship repair enterprises and insurance companies. Contractors are ship repair yards, service companies, authorised centres of steering engine manufacturers, specialised teams and individual experts with experience in steering gears.

What matters for ship repair enterprises and service companies
When responding to a task, specify: experience repairing steering gears of similar type and manufacturer, availability of manufacturer authorisations (Rolls-Royce, Kongsberg, Wärtsilä, Mitsubishi, Kawasaki, etc.), certified hydraulic, electrical, mechanical and control system specialists, availability of spare parts or ability to supply them promptly, valid certificates and approvals (classification societies, ISO, manufacturers), readiness to perform works within the specified timeline and location, ability to test the steering gear and produce protocols, experience with classification societies and surveyors, as well as readiness to provide a warranty on completed works. If the repair is tied to an accident or insurance claim — specify experience with insurance companies and P&I clubs.
Documents and safety
Steering gear repair is performed in accordance with the requirements of classification societies, international conventions (SOLAS, MARPOL, MLC), equipment manufacturer instructions and labour protection rules. When working with pressurised hydraulics, electric drives, rotating machinery, in dock and at height, safety requirements are observed: work permit, personal protective equipment, fencing of danger zones, equipment lockout, trial rudder movements under supervision. Test protocols, defect acts, material certificates and entries in ship documents are mandatory elements of the report. If you have experience with such standards — mention it in your response.
