Marine engine repair and maintenance — tasks for service companies
The marine engine is the heart of any vessel. Its condition determines speed, manoeuvrability, generator operation and all onboard equipment. Repair of main and auxiliary engines requires specialised equipment, genuine spare parts and experienced engineers. The Steel Water task board publishes tasks for repair, diagnostics and maintenance of marine engines of all types and manufacturers.
Tasks are posted by shipowners, shipping companies, technical managers, shipyards and fleet operators. Contractors are engine service companies, authorised dealers, mobile repair teams, suppliers of genuine and aftermarket spare parts.
Types of engine work on the task board
- Main engine overhaul — complete disassembly, inspection, replacement of piston group, bearings, valves, liners
- Top overhaul — replacement of injectors, fuel pumps, turbochargers, pumps, heat exchangers
- Auxiliary engine repair — diesel generators, emergency engines, lifeboat engines
- Diagnostics and inspection — compression test, oil analysis, cylinder endoscopy, vibration analysis
- Tuning and adjustment — fuel equipment, valve timing, turbocharging systems
- Turbocharger overhaul — rotor balancing, bearing replacement, casing restoration
- Complete engine replacement — removal of the old, installation of new or rebuilt, commissioning
- Spare parts supply — genuine and aftermarket, new and reconditioned components
What to specify in an engine task
- Vessel — name, type, IMO, deadweight, location (port, dock, at sea)
- Engine — manufacturer (MAN, Wärtsilä, Caterpillar, Cummins, MTU, Yanmar, Mitsubishi, etc.), model, serial number
- Engine type — main, auxiliary, emergency; type (2-stroke, 4-stroke, diesel, gas)

- Running hours — hours, date of last repair
- Symptoms — power loss, increased fuel or oil consumption, smoke, knocking, vibration, overheating
- Scope — repair, diagnostics, maintenance, replacement, spare parts supply

What matters for service companies
Engine repair is always a responsible operation requiring experience, equipment and spare parts. When responding to a task, specify: experience with the specific manufacturer and engine model, authorisation or certificate, access to genuine spare parts, availability of a mobile team or workshop, work timeline, warranty on repair and components. For an overhaul — provide a work plan and stage-by-stage timeline. If the task is urgent — confirm readiness to depart within hours.
Safety and documents
After repair, the engine undergoes running-in, load tests and control parameter measurement. All work is documented by an act, test report and warranty certificate. For main engines, compliance with classification society requirements is important — if you have such experience, mention it in your response. For flagged vessels — consider flag state requirements for repair confirmation and certification.
Post engine tasks for free — find a service or spare parts supplier in the required region. Or respond if you have authorisation, equipment or a parts warehouse. All active tasks — in the Engine section.
