Marine equipment dismantling — tasks for contractors and service companies

Dismantling is the first stage of any major repair, modernisation or ship recycling. The quality of dismantling work determines the safety of subsequent operations, the preservation of adjacent equipment and the overall project timeline. The Steel Water task board publishes tasks for dismantling marine equipment, metal structures and systems of any complexity — from removing a single pump to breaking up a whole vessel.

Tasks are posted by shipowners, shipping companies, technical managers, shipyards, ship repair yards and fleet recycling companies. Contractors are dismantling contractors, installation firms, service companies, specialised teams with cutting, lifting and removal equipment.

Types of dismantling work on the task board

  • Main and auxiliary engine dismantling — disconnecting all systems, preparing for removal and transport
  • Pump, heat exchanger, separator dismantling — engine room, cooling systems, fuel systems
  • Deck equipment dismantling — cranes, windlasses, winches, capstans, hatch covers, ladders
  • Steering gear and propeller-rudder complex dismantling — including stern tube, shafting, propeller
  • Systems and piping dismantling — fuel, oil, water, hydraulic, pneumatic
  • Electrical equipment and cable routes dismantling — switchboards, generators, cables, lighting
  • Metal structures and hull elements dismantling — superstructures, wheelhouse, deck structures
  • Complete vessel dismantling — scrapping, preparing for recycling, handling hazardous materials

What to specify in a dismantling task

  • Vessel or object — name, type, IMO, location (port, dock, shipyard, anchorage)
  • What is dismantled — list of equipment, systems, structures; weight, dimensions, quantity
  • Working conditions — afloat, in dock, on shore, with time limits, with a representative present
  • What to do with dismantled items — removal, recycling, storage, handover to customer
  • Safety requirements — work with fuels, asbestos, hot work, work at height, lifting operations
  • Documents — availability of schematics, drawings, permits, dismantling plan
  • Urgency — scheduled or emergency, tied to start of repair or decommissioning
  • Additional — need for contractor with crane, mobile crane, floating crane, cutting equipment

What matters for dismantling contractors

Dismantling is work where safety, equipment and experience are critical. When responding to a task, specify: experience with similar equipment and on similar vessels, availability of certified welders and gas cutters, availability of lifting equipment (crane, mobile crane, floating crane, winches), ability to work with hazardous materials (fuels, asbestos, paints), work timeline, readiness for removal and recycling, compliance with occupational and industrial safety requirements. If the task is urgent — confirm readiness to depart within hours.

Safety and documents

Dismantling work is classified as high-risk. Before work begins, the following are prepared: hot work permit, work execution plan (WEP), object readiness act, dismantling schematic. Work with fuels is carried out after cleaning and degassing. Work with asbestos — with protective equipment and special disposal. All dismantled equipment is handed over by act indicating weight, condition and further movement. If you have experience with such standards — mention it in your response.

Post dismantling tasks for free — find a contractor or team in the required region. Or respond if you have equipment, a team and experience. All active tasks — in the Dismantling section.
