Engaging subcontractors for specialised works — tasks for contractor organisations

Subcontracting is engaging specialised organisations and teams to perform certain types of works within a large project: ship repair, modernisation, construction, installation or dismantling of equipment. Subcontracting allows the customer to focus on key tasks, reduce timelines, gain access to narrow specialists and equipment not available in-house. In the maritime industry, subcontracting is especially in demand because projects are complex, multi-disciplinary and require welders, installers, commissioning engineers, dismantling specialists and modernisation experts. The Steel Water task board publishes tasks for all types of subcontracting works — from installation and dismantling to commissioning and complete vessel modernisation.

Tasks are posted by shipowners, shipping companies, technical managers, shipyards, ship repair enterprises, general contractors, service companies and fleet operators. Contractors are contractor organisations, installation and dismantling teams, commissioning companies, service centres, specialised teams and individual experts with maritime industry experience.

Types of subcontracting works on the task board

  • Installation — installation of equipment, machinery, systems, pipelines, electrical equipment
  • Dismantling — dismantling of equipment, machinery, systems, metal structures
  • Commissioning — adjustment, tuning, testing, bringing equipment to operating mode
  • Modernisation — retrofitting, replacement of outdated systems, integration of new equipment
  • Specialised welding works — welding of critical structures, pipelines, special materials
  • Insulation and painting works — thermal insulation, anti-corrosion protection, fire protection
  • Work at height and in enclosed spaces — industrial climbing, work in tanks, cofferdams, holds
  • Electrical installation works — cable laying, switchboard installation, equipment connection
  • Hydraulic and pneumatic works — installation and adjustment of hydraulics and pneumatics
  • Machining and part manufacturing — turning, milling, boring works on site
  • Emergency subcontracting works — urgent engagement of specialists to eliminate accidents
  • Complex subcontracting — turnkey execution of a full cycle of works at the customer's facility

What to specify in a subcontracting task

  • Object — vessel, shipyard, infrastructure facility, workshop, equipment
  • Type of works — installation, dismantling, commissioning, modernisation, specialised works
  • Scope of works — list, volumes, timelines, quality and documentation requirements
  • Initial data — drawings, diagrams, design documentation, technical specification, defect lists
  • Work location — port, shipyard, dock, anchorage, region, specific facility
  • Timeline — planned start and completion dates, stages, tied to other works
  • Requirements for subcontractor — certificates, approvals, licences, experience with similar works, team composition
  • Cooperation terms — contract form, payment procedure, warranties, liability
  • Special conditions — work at customer's facility, permits, labour protection requirements
  • Report format — acts, as-built documentation, test protocols, warranty obligations

What matters for contractor organisations and subcontractors

When responding to a task, specify: specialisation in a specific type of works, experience performing similar subcontracting projects in the maritime industry, availability of certified specialists, teams and equipment, valid certificates and approvals (classification societies, ISO, SRO, licences), readiness to work at the customer's facility within the specified timeline, ability to promptly mobilise a team and equipment, availability of tools, rigging and materials, experience with general contractors and shipyards, readiness to produce as-built documentation and provide a warranty, as well as compliance with labour protection and safety requirements. If works involve dangerous conditions (height, enclosed spaces, hazardous media) — specify relevant approvals and experience.

Documents and safety

Subcontracting works are performed in accordance with the requirements of classification societies, international conventions (SOLAS, MARPOL, MLC), design documentation, construction norms and labour protection rules. When working at height, in enclosed spaces, with hazardous media, lifting mechanisms and electrical equipment, safety requirements are observed: work permit, personal protective equipment, gas-air environment control, ventilation, fencing of danger zones, equipment lockout. As-built documentation, work completion acts, test protocols, material certificates and entries in ship documents are mandatory elements of the report. If you have experience with such standards — mention it in your response.
