Marine equipment installation — tasks for contractors and installation companies
Installation is the fitting of new equipment or replacement of existing equipment on a vessel. The quality of installation determines the reliability of systems, crew and vessel safety, and equipment service life. Installation is performed after design and before commissioning, and is often linked to dismantling old equipment, changing structures and laying new routes. The Steel Water task board publishes tasks for installation of equipment of any scale — from a single sensor to comprehensive system installation.
Tasks are posted by shipowners, shipping companies, technical managers, shipyards, ship repair yards, design offices and system integrators. Contractors are installation companies, service companies, shipyards, shipbuilding yards, contractor teams with approvals and equipment.
Types of installation work on the task board
- Main and auxiliary engine installation — fitting, alignment, fastening, system connection
- Pump, heat exchanger, separator installation — engine room, cooling systems, fuel systems
- Deck equipment installation — cranes, windlasses, winches, capstans, hatch covers
- Steering gear and propeller-rudder complex installation — including stern tube, shafting, propeller
- Systems and piping installation — fuel, oil, water, hydraulic, pneumatic
- Electrical equipment and cable route installation — switchboards, generators, cables, lighting
- Automation and monitoring systems installation — sensors, controllers, control systems, integration
- Metal structures and superstructure installation — platforms, railings, ladders, deckhouses
- Firefighting and safety systems installation — sprinklers, gas firefighting, emergency systems
What to specify in an installation task
- Vessel or object — name, type, IMO, location (port, dock, shipyard, afloat)
- What is installed — list of equipment, systems, structures; weight, dimensions, quantity
- Manufacturer and model — manufacturer, model, serial number, complete set
- Installation conditions — afloat, in dock, on shore, with time limits, with manufacturer's representative present
- Scope — installation, alignment, connection, testing, integration with existing systems
- Documents — drawings, schematics, installation manual, WEP, technical specification
- Timeline — when required, tied to repair or departure
- Additional — need for crane, mobile crane, floating crane, welding, NDT, testing
What matters for installation companies
Installation is work where personnel qualification, equipment and experience with specific systems are critical. When responding to a task, specify: experience with installation of similar equipment, availability of certified specialists (welders, electricians, installers, commissioning engineers), availability of equipment (cranes, winches, test benches, tools, instruments), ability to perform the full cycle (installation, alignment, connection, testing), readiness to work with equipment from a specific manufacturer, work timeline, warranty on installation. If the task involves commissioning and integration — specify commissioning experience.
Safety and documents
Installation work is carried out per a work execution plan (WEP) and process charts, with a hot work permit, in compliance with occupational and industrial safety rules. After installation, alignment, hydraulic and electrical tests, tightness checks and control measurements are performed. Results are documented by reports, acts and as-built documentation. If you have experience with such standards — mention it in your response.
