Technical consulting and expertise — tasks for engineers, experts and consulting companies

Technical consulting and expertise in the maritime industry is a complex of services for independent assessment of the technical condition of vessels, machinery, systems and equipment, as well as consulting shipowners, shipping companies, shipyards and insurance companies on technical matters. Expertise helps make correct decisions when purchasing a vessel, repairing, modernising, insuring, investigating accidents and settling disputes. An error in technical assessment can cost millions, so only qualified specialists with maritime industry experience are involved in expertise. The Steel Water task board publishes tasks for all types of technical consulting and expertise — from pre-purchase vessel inspection to fleet technical audit and expertise in accident cases.

Tasks are posted by shipowners, shipping companies, technical managers, fleet operators, shipyards, insurance companies, P&I clubs, banks, investors and law firms. Contractors are expert engineers, technical consultants, survey companies, consulting firms, specialised bureaus and individual experts with maritime industry experience.

What matters for expert engineers and consulting companies

When responding to a task, specify: specialisation in technical consulting and expertise (hull, machinery, systems, electrical, automation, fuel), experience with similar vessels and types of expertise, availability of certificates and approvals (classification societies, IFIA, SGS, Bureau Veritas, independent experts), experience preparing conclusions for insurance companies, courts and arbitrations, knowledge of international conventions (SOLAS, MARPOL, MLC) and classification society requirements, readiness to travel to vessel or port within the specified timeline, availability of measuring and diagnostic equipment, experience with documentation and preparing technical conclusions, as well as readiness to provide a warranty on completed works. If the expertise is tied to court or arbitration proceedings — specify experience as an expert witness.

Documents and safety

Technical consulting and expertise are performed in accordance with the requirements of classification societies, international conventions (SOLAS, MARPOL, MLC), professional association standards and labour protection rules. When inspecting a vessel, working in the engine room, in enclosed spaces, with electrical equipment, at height and in dock, safety requirements are observed: work permit, personal protective equipment, gas-air environment control, fencing of danger zones. Technical conclusions, reports, acts, test protocols and photo recording are mandatory elements of the report. If you have experience with such standards — mention it in your response.
